KinderGARDEN Week 12 07-24-11 July 24, 2011

It was a hot one this past week! Here are a few things we observed in the garden this week:

First Tomato Harvested!

First "real" Jack Be Little Pumpkin

Until now, all of the little pumpkins would grow to about a cherry tomato size and then shrivel up. This week we noticed two large ones that are doing great! Here’s Mister Emerald staring at the “Punkin”! And we’ve never grown pumpkins before, but one of the three is threatening to take over the world. It’s UNBELIEVABLE how large they grow!

First Violetto beans on the trellis

And here’s how the three areas of the KinderGARDEN are shaping up:

Cutting Garden

Trellis Arch

Sunflower Forest

And Kim asked if we have any animals and if they are a part of our garden! We have cats, but only one insists rather loudly and obnoxiously to go outside. She is a Mama cat we rescued, who gave us 3 adorable baby kittens in which to love! She is a master hunter, although I think she’s allowing her prey to feast on our square foot garden bed before she pounces… Here she is laying down on the job apparently!

KinderGARDEN Week 11 “I’m ready for my Close Up, Mr. DeMille” July 15, 2011

I had to google that quote to learn the exact origins! I’ve heard it before and thought it aptly applied to this week’s KinderGARDEN update. Last week, Kim at The Inadvertent Farmer asked that we get up close and personal with our cameras in the garden. So, here are the results:

KinderGARDEN Update 07-11-11 July 11, 2011

Late posting again, but we made it in under the wire again! We had a busy holiday weekend celebrating our beautiful country.

We mostly just putzed in the garden this week: tying up vines, pulling weeds (drat that PURSLANE), trying to keep everything alive with no rain in sight. (So wish we’d have spent the money on a diy rain barrel system-next year.) And of course, we munched! The Golden Raspberry patch went nuts this season. Usually there are two harvests-a small one in June and a larger one in September. Mister Emerald has found that he LOVES  “strawberries” as he calls them and eats every single one that’s ripe. I love all the garden bloggers who blog their “Harvest Mondays” with Daphne’s Dandelions, but I’d never have any figures to post. Nearly everything is eaten garden-side!

Not a great pic, but Mister Pearl is feeding Mister Emerald raspberries!

Lastly, our sunflower forest is growing like crazy. We had Father of Pearls make this cute Sunflower Measuring Stick (8 feet high) and by the time I’m posting this from when the pictures were taken, they’ve grown at least two more feet! (And I just looked at that picture again wondering why Miss Pearl grew so much too-ahhh she’s standing on a brick paver stack!) They’re starting to bloom and I love all the varieties. We could have used some cute, short Teddy Bear varieties too.

This pretty Sunflower gal was the first to bloom. I thought it was a “Vanilla Ice”, but it may be the “Jade Hybrid” as it’s center is light colored.  This flower growing from seed can get very addictive. We plan to save lots of seed this fall.
